Flame Retardant Material

Description

What is Flame Retardant Material?

Flame retardant material refers to a type of functional material that can inhibit, delay or stop the spread of flame when exposed to fire or high temperature. It either has inherent flame-resistant properties or gains such performance through chemical modification or physical treatment. This material is widely used in textiles, non-woven fabrics, and pet supplies, playing a critical role in reducing fire risks.

Core Flame Retardant Mechanisms

Flame retardant materials work through one or more of the following mechanisms to suppress combustion:

1.Endothermic cooling

The material decomposes at high temperatures and absorbs a large amount of heat from the environment, lowering the surface temperature below the ignition point and preventing further combustion. Common additives include aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide.

2. Oxygen barrier & char formation

When heated, the material forms a dense, non-combustible carbon layer on the surface. This layer isolates oxygen and heat transfer, blocking the supply of combustion-supporting substances and inhibiting flame spread.

3.Free radical chain reaction inhibition

Certain flame retardants release active substances that capture the free radicals generated during combustion, breaking the chain reaction of the combustion process and quickly extinguishing the flame.

Classification of Flame Retardant Materials

Flame retardant materials are divided into two categories based on their flame-retardant properties source:

Category

Characteristics

Common Examples

Inherent flame retardant materials

Flame resistance is a natural property of the material itself; does not require additional modification; excellent durability and stability

Aramid fiber, glass fiber, polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) fiber

Flame-retardant modified materials

Made by adding flame retardants to ordinary materials or conducting surface treatment; cost-effective and widely applicable

Flame-retardant PP non-woven fabric, flame-retardant polyester microfiber, flame-retardant cotton cloth
